    Thanks for the welcome,

I am so far not all that hot on putting stuff on your website, so bear with me. I was wanting to send you the attached two old photographs of the Killin Under 15s football teams circa 1958. The team played only 3 games in the spring of 1958, two against Gartmore U15s home and away (picture 1 is the home fixture against Gartmore) and one away against Kenmore U15s (picture 2 is the team at Kenmore). The team lost both games against Gartmore but managed a draw at Kenmore, probably the reason only three games were played.

Unfortunately I have forgotten many of the names but maybe your ‘readers’ can fill in the ? blanks.

The team in Picture 1 was :-
    Back Row (L to R): Alistair Fraser, Freddy Simpson, ? , Davie Sutherland, ? , Tommy Bickerton, ? , ?
Front Row (L to R): ?, Jimmy Miller (guest player from Dunblane), Mitchell Watson, Grant McDonald.

The team in Picture 2 was:-
    Back Row (L to R): ? , ? , Alistair MacGregor, Freddy Simpson, ?, ?
Front Row (L to R): Tommy Bickerton, Alister Fraser, Mitchell Watson, Grant McDonald, Davie Sutherland.

If you can post this on your old photos section I should be most grateful.

    Cheers

Mitchell (Titch) Watson, (formerly of Fernbank, Main Street, Killin, Circa 1949 to 59)

Thanks for the replies on the Under 15s football teams from 1958 it’s nice to know some of us are still around.
I am now enjoying retirement in Perth mostly on the golf course. The nearest I get to football now is watching my 18 year old grandson play for one of the local Perth youth teams. He is a bit taller and a bit faster then I was, he must take after his father.

    Cheers Mitch

How Interesting – my husband played in these games – for Gartmore – in 1958 he would have been 12 years old. His recollection was these were under 13 matches?. Gartmore beat Killin at Gartmore 11 – 0 (sorry)
but in the return match Killin won either 6 or 7 – 1 (My husband scored the only Gartmore goal. ) He remembers at Killin, a terrible wet day with a really heavy pitch – and a mix up over the ages of the return match – Killin having fielded under 15’s ??. However remembers changing in someones flat – in main street – thinks above the now Co-op?? and a after game spread of sandwiches – cakes etc. Have attached a photo (I hope) of the Gartmore team. who are as follows:
    Team Back row: Grant Stevens,Cally More,Wilson Stevens,Jim Rook,Stuart Johnston.
Front Row: Sid Gordon, Hutton Little, Brian McWilliams, Grant Stevens, Dickie More, Fred Rook(my Hubby)
We visit Killin with our touring caravan, and for the last 4 years have had a part seasonal pitch, September & October at Maragowan, on the edge of the village . Unfortunately due to prior commitments we won’t be able to do that this year, but hope to have a week during Spring and Autumn.

Thanks for the reply Beth and the Gartmore team recollections.

I thought we lost both games but there you go. The games were definately Under 15s as both villages didn’t have enough players to make up a team younger than that. I arranged the games with Gartmore with Wilson Stevens who was in the same 4th year class as me at the old McLaren High School.

The house your husband remembers was Fernbank which was my parents house, my mother and other team mothers sorted out all the food whilst if I remember the Killin and Gartmore dads had a few beers. The visit to Gartmore was similar.

I remember a few of the Gartmore team names from school so it brings back memories.

    Mitchell,
I don’t know you as I did not come to Killin until 1960, however I think in pic 2 the person in the back row far left looks like a Sinclair probably John. Do you really think both these photo’s were taken in the same year as there is a great difference in the age appearance of Freddie Simpson and Alasdair Fraser. You don’t think the photo’s were from games a couple of years apart do you? It is nice to hear from people past with an interest in Killin and if you are ever up this way look me up and we can have a crack as I was friendly with all these lads as well and am still in contact with alot of them. In fact I am going to send Tommy Bickerton the photo’s and ask him if he can fill in any of the names as well, he lives in Adelaide Australia now. I will update you if I get any more information.

    regards

    Davie

    Nice to hear from you.

I moved to Taynuilt in the Autumn of 1958, my father was involved with the construction of the hydro schemes at the time and the works in Killin were all but completed by then. The team pictures were his photographs and they were definately taken in the same year but it could have been 1957 or1958. I came across them when I was sorting out boxes of his old slides which I had put away in my attic after my father died in the early 1980’s. I’m just pleased the pictures survived.

I was pals with Alister Fraser, Alistair MacGregor and Feddy Simpson who were about the same age as me but knew all the others although they were younger. Tommy Bickerton’s older sister Lorna was a great pal of my sister May.

On another subject completely does anyone remember the Killin Krazy Kats Skiffle Group which I was in with Willie Sutherland, John Hamilton and Ally? Anderson. We played at half time during the country dance band breaks at dances at the McLaren Hall and also at a village concert, all back in 1958.

    Cheers Mitchell

Hi Mitchell and the Canadian Mr Fraser,
I wondered if something like this would bring you out of the woodwork Alastair. I printed off copies for Jock when he was up for your uncles funeral in Rothes, so he will probably send you a copy. Mitchell I think we now have all the names bar one, Jock & myself went through them all and there is only one we did not have any idea who it was but I thought it may have been a Guild from Glen Lochay, one of Jock Guilds brothers I thought perhaps Davie or George. I am going to ask Jock when I see him though just to confirm. I also want to check out the goalie you thought may be Davie Sutherland as I am not so sure. Davie Sutherland is the one on the far right of the front row of the other picture. Once I have updated with Jock & Davie (I also emailed them to Tommy Bickerton) I will update you with all the names we have aand you can then add them to your copies.

    cheers for now
    Davie

You may be right about one of the Guild lads being in the photo but you can be assured that Davie Sutherland was the goalie in one picture and an outfielder in the second one. I knew Davie well as he was one of the lads, who liked me, stayed in the McLaren High School hostel during the school week. His older brother Willie was one of the lads in the skiffle group that I mentioned in my last posting. I also used to fancy his big sister, but that’s another story.

    Cheers Mitch
