    Hi

I’m developing a new online directory for Holiday Accommodation in Scotland. Once completed, this directory will be advertised on over 50,000 websites!

Anyone who owns holiday accommodation in Scotland (or knows somebody that does), please feel free to visit, register and submit the accommodation details –

    http://www.scotland-holiday-accommodation.com

The project is still in development and I would be grateful for any feedback or questions you may have.

    Cheers

looks good but then again it doesn’t actually work does it.
I think this is another great idea that does not actually do what it says.

I followed the links, did what I was told, and still had no success at all.
    Great idea.
Shame it doesn’t actually work the way it is claimed.
Maybe it is me that has the problem.
Anyone else actually followed the links?

‘this directory will be advertised on over 50,000 websites!’

Do not believe this. Do not pay for this. Do not in any way base your income upon this. It is a totally meaningless claim and I sincerely hope you did not pay anyone to make such a meaningless claim.

At it again, knocking the efforts of the good folk of Killin. It’s free, can’t you read, so you don’t have to pay for it.. Yes some of the links don’t work, do we complain about your web site? Get a life.

I like to encourage folks in the village and I like to encourage folks who want to live, work and bring up their kids in a rural community. I thought that is what Tombreck was alos about , but it seems that by your comments you do not want to support others outside Tombreck.

I looked at the site it costs nothing to advertise on it and I followed the links , I did as I was told and it did work. OK it is early days and these things take time to gather momentum but i am sure it is something worth supporting , it is for me , but perhaps not for you.

Mind you I did do it during daylight hours and I hadn’t been drinking perhaps that made a difference.

I also looked beyond that site and looked at his main site and was most impressed by the things he had done already so I am more than happy to support him.

If I was not happy I would have benn constructive in my
    criticism

As an aside I was at two events in the Maclaren Hall yesterday ( that is the big hall
as you come into Killin for those that do not know, it wis gifted to the vibrant and involved village by a Mr MacLaren last century and has seen many event over the years ) one event was a leaflet day but also a chance to see what was happening in the local area with regards to the landscape, the other was a meeting of the local Heriatge Society . At both meetings Tombreck was mentioned in dispatches , you may have enjoyed both events if you had been there

At it again, misunderstanding what I was saying. The advice not to pay was for Billy. I get 2 or 3 offers a day from people saying they can put links to my sites on thousands of websites. They invariably involve paying small but regular sums of money to someone that you cannot trace. I was also hoping that advising someone of a broken link was constructive criticism. Admittedly the link at the top for accommodation owners works, but the one at the bottom still doesn’t.
I also tried to contact Billy directly to offer this advice but the email link didn’t work.
I happen to think that it is OK for the occasional person in a healthy community to criticize things, there are plenty of back patters on the site so I’m sure it can stand the odd criticizer can’t it?
Vic, should any of you find fault with any websites I manage I would be delighted to hear from you, it helps me maintain them, but I think personal insults are not required, I have a very good life and hope you do too.
Thank you Alistair for the info on Mr McLaren, and yes the events were very good, a shame there were not more local producers and suppliers exhibiting, and I was at both of them.

Still think you come across as way too heavy and you seem like to get a down on everything that happens on the web site and in Killin. What is the point in all this neagative attitude , really can’t get to grips with it

Point taken Alistair, will attempt to be more positive in my language in future.
Shooting from hip I promise not to mention the un-approved cctv surveliance camera in Main Street if you don’t mention the Webcam. OK?
There must be a better view of Killin to show the world than the traffic on Main Street.

    Hi

thanks for your replies and views – both positive and negative.

Please remember, the directory is still in development – as written in my original post.

The project aims to meet 2 main targets – attracting web traffic and enquiries, and providing an easy to use, (very) low cost and reliable service for Accommodation owners.

The look of the site will change and registered Accommodation owners and site visitors will find new features and enhancements being added frequently.

    Cheers
    Billy.

Okay, I feel ready to enter back into the fray again.

Billy’s site is a well conceived concept, well designed and well structured. It is easy to navigate, good graphics and, from what I can see, it is hand coded from scratch in Perl/CGI, not the easiest, developer-friendly or resource-friendly language. It has valid XHTML coding and to be honest if a couple of links were mis-directed it hardly calls for saying it doesn’t work. Just a note at the bottom of a meaningful post “BTW, a couple of links are broken” would probably have been more warmly welcomed.

Do not believe this. Do not pay for this. Do not in any way base your income upon this. It is a totally meaningless claim and I sincerely hope you did not pay anyone to make such a meaningless claim.

Calm down dear, how do you know it isn’t?

Shooting from hip I promise not to mention the un-approved cctv surveliance camera in Main Street if you don’t mention the Webcam. OK?
There must be a better view of Killin to show the world than the traffic on Main Street.

Can you clarify exactly which “un-approved cctv surveliance camera” you are talking about? Thanks. As for the view, what would you, or indeed others, prefer? The ever changing and exciting falls? The ever changing and exciting hills? Tell us and we can adapt, we are very adaptable you know. It’s better to have content that changes every 15 minutes rather than once every 4 months. Is there a webcam setup on the Tombreck site?

should any of you find fault with any websites I manage I would be delighted to hear from you, it helps me maintain them

I personally don’t find any fault with tombreck.co.uk.

However, if you wanted to speed up your photo gallery pages, instead of using full sized images as thumbnails, resize the images and save them seperately as thumbnails (ie 100 x 70 pixels). This speeds up your page loading time, and saves on bandwidth. For example http://tombreck.co.uk/page0402.htm should load in half a second rather than 15-20.

I think the text size is too small, I didn’t increase the text size in my browser as I would rather navigate away.

Seeing the words “Under Construction” always gets on my big wick. Aren’t all web sites constantly under construction? If not they’ll start to rust!

Personally I was bored on the site and I wouldn’t return again in a hurry, having no reason to. You might want to think about some sticky content as well as what content you already have?

Big G !! how many warnings will i get before you ban me for saying what i thing?

    Hullo Shooting from the Hip,

Depends how bad your posts are! So long as you say what you think rather thinking what you say and don’t pat us on the back that often. Apparently that’s a no go area these days. Maybe they’d rather a quick pat on the bum perhaps :banassrid ? (Another no go area from my POV – insert noise of wrong answer from Family Fortunes)

Anyway, it’s good to be back! Now onto getting the Killin News up, patting myself on the back, updating the calendar, patting myself on the back, uploading the backlog of photos, patting myself on the back…

    Lots of love,

    Webmaster

Thanks G. Perl is easy once you know how 🙂

It is true, the website is still in development – what some might call “Beta”. There are areas which need improved and its the real world users who will, through their use of the site, allow me to work on improving ease of use and flow.

The Directory is now advertised and linked to from over 50,000 websites. This has been made possible through legitimate business colleagues (and, Dolan, not by paying an untraceable individual offering me a deal too good to believe).

I am currently building a network of about 40 informational and topical websites relevant to the accommodation site. Each of these sites will link to and advertise the directory. This will further enhance the directory’s ranking in search engines.

I am determined to make this directory a success and I urge anyone who owns holiday accommodation in Scotland to sign up and get involved. As standard, subscription is FREE for 6 months with no obligation but just in case you needed anymore encouragement –

All Owners who register and create an accommodation listing before 1 June will receive FREE subscription for life! *

    Go for it http://www.scotland-holiday-accommodation.com/owners

    * This offer covers all existing accommodation listed on the site

If you experience any difficulties with any part of the registration or accommodation listing, please do not hesitate to contact me. I will be more than happy to help!

    Cheers
    Billy.

I was coding in Perl up until building the front page of this site, which pulls together information from all over the server to display in a “dashboard” style.

The script I wrote used so much system resources that it automatically suspended the hosting account anytime it ran. The hosting company took a look at the script, thought I was trying to run a DOS script, turned around and said basically there’s nothing wrong with the scripting but if you continue to use it we’ll close your account down. Strike 3. Next please.

So I changed hosts and recoded the exact same procedures in PHP which I learnt was a lot lighter on resources, I’d say more advanced than Perl, and pretty much the same language give or take a few pointers.

That’s the story of why half of the KWS is in Perl and the other half is in PHP.

    Big G
