I’m visiting Killin in mid January 2013 to see where my mother’s family left from in the early 1800’s. I’m only staying 3 days in Killin and want to maximise my time. Any suggestions on where to go and what I should see would be most welcome. It would be really nice to have an idea of where the Robertsons farmed before they left Killin.

The family line that we know of is as follows:

Robert Robertson (born around 1720 – ?, parents unknown) married Janet Guild (around 1720 – ?, parents unknown). Robert and Janet married some time before 1743 and had the following children, all recorded as being baptised in Killin:

Mary Robertson, baptised 4 January 1743
John Robertson, baptised 9 December 1744
Isabell Robertson, baptised 13 May 1752
Duncan Robertson, baptised 24 September 1756

Family tradition records that John was baptised at Easter Argeonaig and that Duncan had ‘family at Achmore’ (ie Auchmore).

Their son John Robertson was a farmer according to the death certificate of *his* son Colin Robertson in 1859. John married Ellen/Helen Clark (baptised 16 July 1755, Edramucky – ?), sometime before 1780, location not known. However, family history remembers that Helen/Ellen Clark was the daughter of Finlay Clark and Janet McIlduine. They had the following children, all baptised in Killin:

Ellen Robertson, baptised 14 May 1780
Robert Robertson, baptised 12 August 1781
Anne Robertson, baptised 1 April 1783
Colin Robertson, baptised 26 May 1785, died 1859
James Robertson, baptised 8 September 1789
Christian McMartin of Killin (1792, Killin, Scotland – 1873, Geelong, Australia)

Christian McMartin was the daughter of Archibald McMartin and Katherine (nee) McEwen from Killin, who married on 25 April 1789. She was baptised on 24 June 1792. Her older brother Duncan McMartin was baptised on 28 March 1790 in the same location. There is no information yet on the parents of Archibald McMartin. Christian’s mother Katherine/Catherine McEwen was born to Donald McEwen from Ardeonaig and Christian Campbell, and was baptised on 18 March 1770. Katherine/Catherine’s mother Christian was born to Colin Campbell and Kathrine McIntyre in Easter Ardeonaig on 16 August 1747.

Colin Robertson declared his intention to marry Christian McMartin (1792 – 1873) on 31 December 1825 in Kilmadock Parish , and they married on 13 January 1826 in that Parish. This would appear to confirm that Colin had already left Killin by 1826. Colin’s son John Robertson migrated to Geelong, Australia, in the 1840s.
